Go through this tutorial: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/iPhone/Conceptual/iPhone101/Articles/00_Introduction.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40007514-CH1-SW1

It uses InterfaceBuilder. That's fine to start with. But make sure you also look at the section on creating the view programmatically and understand how it works: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/iPhone/Conceptual/iPhone101/Articles/08_WhereNext.html

You can also get to a lot of helpful documentation, tutorials, and sample code by pressing alt+command+? while in Xcode.

Here is a simple project I made that you can study the source code of: http://github.com/mattdipasquale/tipflips

It doesn't use any nib files. To do this, after starting a window-based iPhone application, delete the MainWindow.xib file and delete the last entry in the project's .plist file that references the MainWindow.xib file. Then, set the fourth argument in the main function from nil to the appDelegate class name for your project.

When you get more advanced, you can study our source code here. But it won't run correctly unless you install & run the local server. I could show you how to do that in person. http://github.com/acani/acani-iphone/tree/master/acani

There are also other cool projects on github.com

Install Git on your computer and go through this book to learn how to use it: If you have Mac 10.6, you can use this git install script I made. Read through this book: http://book.git-scm.com/
